Background

Earlier in 2017, we discussed the overall popularity of sports celebrities. Their following can be quite substantial: A number of athletes are celebrities and well-known around the globe. Why does this matter from a marketing perspective? Companies pay huge endorsement fees to have these athletes promote their products — from sports equipment to sports apparel to energy drinks and to a whole lot more. There are many interesting questions in terms of the top celebrity athletes, such as: Which sports do they represent? Which countries are their home bases?

According to the most recent ESPN World Fame 100 rankings:

  • Of the top 100 athletes in the world fame ratings, 38 play soccer (known as football outside the U.S.), 13 play basketball, 11 play golf, 10 play tennis, and 8 play American football. Twenty other sports are also represented; but NONE of the top 100 is a baseball player.
  • Thirty-five athletes are from the U.S., 9 from Brazil, 7 from Germany, 5 from England, 4 from India, and 4 from Spain. Thirty-six other countries are also represented in the list.
  • Among the top 100 athletes, 92 are male and 8 are female.
  • The top 5 endorsers each earned at least $36 million in the most recent year studied.

How Physically Active Are YOU?

15 Aug

For the last few years, we at EOM have been actively involved with our FitBit and monitoring our daily activities. How are we doing. So-so. 🙁  In comparison, we know that others — in the United States and around the globe — are doing much worse. 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁   Where do YOU stand? 🙂

As Niall McCarthy writes for Statista:

“Have you ever wondered where people tend to walk the most daily on average? Scientists at Stanford University have answered this question by collecting data on a ‘planetary-scale’ to learn how active people are in different countries. While Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare recommends a person walk 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day, the UK’s National Obesity Forum says somebody walking 7,000 to 10,000 would be moderately active.”

“The research found that on average, people walk 4,961 steps a day, far less than the recommended amount above. People in Hong Kong are the most active with 6,880 steps a day, while they are least active in Indonesia, averaging a mere 3,513. The Statista infographic below shows the average steps taken in a selection of larger countries included in the research. In China, people average 6,189 steps a day, while in Japan that number is 6,019. Americans are less active and can be found in the middle of the pack, averaging 4,774 daily steps.

More Than 25% of Super Bowl Advertisers Will Be Newbies

29 Jan

Now, that we (about 120 million U.S. viewers) are about 10 days from Super Bowl 50, the advertising picture is becoming clearer. And after all, this is the “Super Bowl” of advertising with 30-second commercials going for $5 million or so (just for air time).

What is especially interesting about the 50th anniversary Super Bowl is how many companies will be advertising for the first time. As reported by Jeanine Poggi for Advertising Age:

“The usual advertising stalwarts will certainly be on hand for Super Bowl 50, but so will plenty of newbies. Longtime advertisers like Budweiser and Coca-Cola will share the stage with brands like Amazon, Colgate, and Marmot, which are all making their Super Bowl debuts. Overwhelmingly, the marketers making their Super Bowl debuts have one goal in mind — to build brand awareness.”

“There are currently 13 confirmed marketers that will air commercials in the big game for the first time, up from 10 in 2015. Already, that figure would make Super Bowl 50 the third most popular game for new advertisers since such stats began being tracked. There were 19 first-timers in 2000 and 14 in 1999, according to Kantar Media, which has tracked the Super Bowl since 1988.”
