Now, that we (about 120 million U.S. viewers) are about 10 days from Super Bowl 50, the advertising picture is becoming clearer. And after all, this is the “Super Bowl” of advertising with 30-second commercials going for $5 million or so (just for air time).

What is especially interesting about the 50th anniversary Super Bowl is how many companies will be advertising for the first time. As reported by Jeanine Poggi for Advertising Age:

“The usual advertising stalwarts will certainly be on hand for Super Bowl 50, but so will plenty of newbies. Longtime advertisers like Budweiser and Coca-Cola will share the stage with brands like Amazon, Colgate, and Marmot, which are all making their Super Bowl debuts. Overwhelmingly, the marketers making their Super Bowl debuts have one goal in mind — to build brand awareness.”

“There are currently 13 confirmed marketers that will air commercials in the big game for the first time, up from 10 in 2015. Already, that figure would make Super Bowl 50 the third most popular game for new advertisers since such stats began being tracked. There were 19 first-timers in 2000 and 14 in 1999, according to Kantar Media, which has tracked the Super Bowl since 1988.”

  1. I think putting out advertisement in the Super Bowl would be very beneficial for the the companies who did not get to advertise before. It will get exposure over a large audience, and perhaps create more awareness among people. Airing advertisements during the Super Bowl will be able meet the goal of the companies of creating brand awareness.

  2. I believe that the Superbowl commercials of last year were not that good. I didn’t find myself interested in many of them. In many past Superbowl’s I would see commercials I liked a lot and look them up on YouTube or any other video media site and I didn’t do that last year. I just hope that with all of these newcomers this year that the commercials are funny or attention grabbing and not mundane and forgettable like last year.

  3. It is a great opportunity for start-up companies to market their product or service around the Super Bowl season. With an increased number of people watching the Super Bowl, it is inevitable for them to not watch the advertisements, making it a great medium to introduce new products and services. A greater target audience means a costly marketing strategy. Hence, even a 30-second commercial can cost up to $5 million! It is amazing how events like the Super Bowl season seem to create ad frenzies within many companies!

    1. The super bowl brings in not only great football but great advertisements. It amazes me that when I asked people if they watch the Super Bowl for the game or for the advertisements and many say because of the advertisements. The brands spice up their advertisements and make people laugh or shock people. Last year, the advertisements were depressing and I felt that they didn’t bring in many viewers to purchasing from the companies. However, I feel that this year they will be better. Since this is such a big day for companies that advertise, I think its great that new companies are advertising to help get their company out their to the viewers. Cant wait to see whats in store this year for Super Bowl 50.

  4. Sports events are always one of the most popular ways to advertise and market a product due to its high viewership. Establishing brand image and increasing public awareness of the product or the company. Also, you will be surprise how creative companies can be in advertising but usually those with the most entertaining and unique commercial will leave the audience with a great impression. Thus, boost sales and brand recognition to a significant percentage.

  5. I am pleased to hear that some newcomers are making an appearance in the Super Bowl this year. It always feel repetitive to see the same companies advertising beers and chips with the help of some adorable animals. Over time it just becomes mundane and takes away from the excitement of the commercials. While I still find it to be outrageous that such a brief amount of airtime costs more than the average college tuition, it’s a step in the right direction to let some new guys in. It has me excited for what’s to come this weekend. While I don’t follow football and have tapered away from the commercials in recent years, I’ll definitely be tuning in to see who else gets a shot at the spotlight.

  6. I think the new companies that will be advertising during the Superbowl will benefit a lot as there will be millions who will be watching Superbowl. These new companies will get a chance to establish a brand image for themselves. And this advertisements would be good for the viewers too as they will get a taste of some new companies because in the past there have been the same companies who advertise during the Superbowl.
