For years, cable and satellite TV service providers have used the DVR as a major competitive advantage. But, today, streaming services are changing the playing field. To the dismay of TV service providers, channels, and their advertisers, a huge number of customers are cutting the TV cord and turning to Amazon, Netflix, and other streaming subscriptions for their content — aided by smart TV sets as well as plug-in devices that can allow people to stream video content on their sets.

It may be hard to believe, given the dominance of the DVR just a few years ago, but today, slightly more U.S. households (and growing) have access to Netflix than to a DVR — according to Leichtman Research Group. The Leichtman study findings are summarized in the following Statista chart.

  1. Further, what seems interesting about the current juncture of DVR to Netflix is it opens the opportunity for more streaming opportunities and thereby passing by the formal cable companies or really making them obsolete. Additionally, the demand for such streaming opens the doors for specialized items to be streamed.

  2. Gosh. I haven’t used a DVR (electronic device that records video in a digital format) in about a decade. It’s like trying to remember when the last time you listened to a voicemail left on your home telephone? Technology marches forward and we adapt and reap the benefits. No need to have a bunch of disc that run the risk of scratching laying around. Everything is available a t the click of my TV or computer.

  3. I am surprised to see 53% still have DVR. Netflix has taken over the dvr market by streaming almost everything online. You name it and it’s usually there on Netflix – if not then they might be on Hulu, Amazon, iTunes – who needs a dvr?

  5. It’s not hard to see how Netflix is becoming more popular then DVR. Streaming has a lot more content and allows to view complete seasons without having to wait for the next episode. It allows to see movies before they are available on cable and less expensive then cable. Its easier to watch a streaming of a missed episode then having to sit in front of a tv and fast forward through the commercials.
