Still struggling with your efforts at blogging? Still not sure how to write effective blog posts? If your answer is yes, then read on.

According to Rachel Sprung, writing for HubSpot: “As marketers, blogging is essential to our jobs — but it isn’t easy. We have to come up with a topic, write something engaging, optimize it for SEO, and take a ton of other steps to make sure we are writing the best possible post that stands out from other similar topics online. There are 6.7 million people blogging, yet we have to stay original. Though we cannot explain blogging to a science, there are certain steps you can follow to make sure it has the essential components necessary to perform well.”

Here are Sprung’s top 9 tips:

  1. “Understand your audience.”
  2. “Start with a topic and working title.”
  3. “Write an intro (and make it captivating).”
  4. “Organize your content.”
  5. “Write the content.”
  6. “Fix your formatting.”
  7. “Include a CTA [call to action] at the end.”
  8. “Optimize for on-page SEO.’
  9. “Pick a catchy title.”

I think these steps are very helpful to the people who are still unsure about how to start a blog. Most people think it is just a space where we can talk about anything, but the point is to get people involved in it. We want feedback and we want readers because we believe what we are posting is important. So for anyone who wants to start a professional blog, they should definitely follow these steps. As a reader of many blogs for college it is important to have a catchy title, interesting content, and it is nice when the professor knows their audience. It makes reading the blog that more interesting and we are able to respond to it.

I’m a Public Relations major currently taking a PR 100 honors course in which we have to write blog posts every month. I found this article extremely helpful. I struggled with my first blog post but now looking at this list, my second will be a breeze. I believe that the first tip of understanding your audience is the most crucial. In PR we learn that we must know who we are writing to when we are writing press releases or pitch letters. Knowing and understanding the audience helps in targeting the message you are trying to communicate. If you don’t understand the audience, the message you send out will not be effective.

Those points are all amazing advice for anyone who may have issues posting onto their blog. Especially on the Internet, people have a very short attention span. Getting a reader hooked and interested in what you have to say from the very beginning is vital for any blogger. The first thing the reader will see, after already going onto your blog’s webpage, is the title. If the title is uninteresting the reader will look over it. If the title is interesting, but the introductory content is uninteresting, again, the reader will skip over it. Once the reader is properly grasped from the title and introductory statements, you then have their attention and can open them up to some new idea’s that you have to share with the world

I agree with every single one of these tips to create a good blog. I was interested in creating my own blog but my problem starting it was that I didn’t know where to begin. I was lost with how to start it and what I would even talk about. I think it is important that a blog has a meaning. What are you going to be talking about that will allow individuals to continue reading your blog, and maybe even give you feedback. If you follow these tips on how to start a blog, I think that it will be more organized and it will help better your blog.

If I had these tips my freshmen year, first semester, I would’ve done so much better in my blogging project. All these tips were excellent advice on creating a good blog. Especially organizing your blog, no one likes a messy, confusing blog. I also forgot to add in an intro for my old blog as well as targeting an audience. I definitely recommend reading these tips if you want to start a blog or site.
