Background: Repairing Apple iPhone X Costs What?

Please remain calm in reading what follows. 🙂

According to Apple:

“Every iPhone comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty. And there is up to 90 days of complimentary support. The Apple Limited Warranty covers your iPhone and Apple-branded accessories. It protects against defects for one year from the date of purchase. Our warranty [complements] rights provided by consumer law. It doesn’t cover accidents or unauthorized modifications.”

“Complimentary hardware support provides phone support. This includes basic setup, installation, assembly, and connectivity. Complimentary software support also provides phone support. This includes installation, launch, or reinstallation (not data recovery). Your hardware must meet minimum requirements for the software.”

What does this mean? Do not accidentally drop any new iPhone and crack the screen. If you do, you must pay for the repair. And even if you drop the phone within one month of purchase.

The Specifics: Repairing Apple iPhone X Costs What?

Now, let’s discuss the repair costs for the iPhone X. Remember, the warranty info above applies to all iPhones.

Again, let’s turn directly to Apple for basic conditions and costs of iPhone repair:

“Screen repair prices apply if you need to replace your screen due to accidental damage or mishandling. Accidental damage isn’t covered by the Apple warranty. Not covered if your iPhone screen breaks while under warranty and you don’t have AppleCare+ coverage. Not covered if your screen stops working and your iPhone isn’t covered by the Apple warranty, consumer law, or AppleCare+. If your iPhone has damage not limited to the screen, see the ‘Other damage’ fees.”

For the iPhone X, these are the costs. “Screen repair only — $279. Other damage — $549.”

iPhone X repairs cost much more than prior models. Why the big jump? CNBC observes:  “That makes sense. The iPhone X includes a glass-covered chassis and OLED display.”

Buy AppleCare+coverage and repair costs drop. According to Apple, $199 gets you this for the iPhone x:

“AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone. It adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage. Each incident incurs a service fee of $29 for screen damage, or $99 for any other damage, plus applicable tax. In addition, get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts via chat or phone.”.

“How to get AppleCare+. Add it to your bag during the checkout process when you purchase your new iPhone. Or buy it within 60 days of your iPhone purchase. Your iPhone purchase date is the date we ship and charge you for your order.”

In Conclusion: Repairing Apple iPhone X Costs What?

Our comparison: (1) Damage the screen two different times. Repairs are $558 without Apple+. And $199 + $58 = $257 with AppleCare+. (2) Damage the phone beyond the screen two different times. Repairs are $1,098 without Apple+. And $199 + $198 = $397 with AppleCare+.

  1. Usually a consumer won’t consider the costs of repairing a phone when purchasing – but if they’re deciding between the 8 and the X, it’s a significant difference. Most people wouldn’t know these numbers at the time of purchase. Maybe if they did, they would choose the 8 instead, and sales for the 8 wouldn’t be lagging so much. My roommate just broke her iPhone 5 and bought the 8 to replace it, and she said they were running a promotion for the 8 with a small down payment – most likely to try to get it off the shelves.

  2. We want new technology and with that we have to keep in mind that the prices of repairs will go high because of more complex parts that are attached with the device. iPhone X is a clear example of that, with Apple moving to Glass from Aluminum, it has enhanced its features and overall look but that come at a cost, cost of replacing it. Having a case is the best bet over here as it can save your phone and for people who don’t like using a case, go with Apple care as you’ll surely need one for iPhone X. $549 for screen repair, that sounds way too much as you can nearly get an iPhone 7 for that price so shelling out $199 for Apple Care should not sound that much if you’re a rough user. However, there are many drop tests video on YouTube about iPhone X that show that it’s not as fragile as it looks and it can handle normal drops without having a lot of scuffs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vHCBwJVeO4 This video is uploaded by a youtuber who makes video about every apple device and does various tests and it shows that iPhone X triumphed iPhone 7 in terms of durability. Surely, it has a lot to do with luck but it’s not that bad as it’s all over the web, you just have to be slightly more careful as you’re paying a hefty amount for the device and you gotta be a bit careful.

  3. I think that despite these phone repairs being ridiculously expensive, there’s a good reason due to the fact that these phones are all glass and that the iPhone X supports an OLED display. This basically stresses the fact that more people should have a decent case/screen protector in order to protect their phone. People should consider being covered in warranty/applecare + so the consequences of damaging a phone aren’t as significant. I believe that this is the way to go.

  4. The cost to repair the Iphone x in comparison to the 8 without applecare + is significantly higher. This may be due to the fact that the X has a fullscreen and OLED display, but still, to repair certain damages on the phone costs almost half of its original cost. This doesn’t make sense, as a person essentially has to pay half of their original phone price to get it working again. Is this really fair? After reading about apple care +, I do believe that it is worth it. It reduces the cost to repair the phone greatly and even though you do have to pay extra for the service, it seems to be worth it in the long run.

  5. The price alone of the iPhone X is absolutely absurd, and I hadn’t even know about the crazy repair costs until reading this. Clearly, Apple is making repair costs of the new phone so ridiculous so that consumers invest in the AppleCare+. With more people purchasing this protection plan, Apple will likely be bringing in more money. It really is a smart business tactic. But even with AppleCare+, it is still insane to me how much consumers are paying for just a phone. It is also likely that consumers who decide to buy the iPhone X do not even know about the very high prices of repairing just a broken screen. Many people are likely going to get stuck paying these crazy prices because, realistically, people (especially young people) crack their phone screens or damage their phone in some way more often than we’d like to admit. Overall, the iPhone X is just too much of an investment.

  6. I know a lot of millennials will be purchasing the iPhone X. After seeing what it costs to buy the product alone, and after reading this post about repairs, I find it silly to invest in such an expensive item, for a generation who is leaving college and needs as much money as possible to start their life. This post is another reason why I will continue to believe the iPhone X is just a ludicrous waste of money.

  7. Unfortunately, when buying the iPhone many consumers are not aware of the difference in repair costs for various iPhones. Personally, I would not buy the iPhone X because repairing the phone would not only be costly but difficult to do at home. What I loved about my iPhone 5s is that I can buy a $20 screen off Amazon and just replace it at home by changing the screens out. I have a couple of people’s old iPhone 5s’s that I keep as backup phone because that particular model was so easy to fix. Repair expenses are an important aspect that consumers should consider because of how frequently iPhones break.

  8. I replaced my iPhone 6 with 8 because of the broken screen. When I bought the new iPhone, the sales asked me whether I bought the AppleCare+. I said no. First, the price of the iPhone 8 is so high. Second, I have the confidence that I can protect the phone as always (even if the fact is not). In fact, the AppleCare+ is basically a kind of profit-gaining method. As the high price of AppleCare+ and repair scared customers, it is sellable moment for phone case producers! In order to protect the phone better, people don’t want their phone to be naked anymore.

  9. It would seem that the sales of the new Iphone X were not exactly what people thought they would be. However, like the earlier models, I believe that sales will eventually sustain being that many consumers are realizing that right now repair costs are way too high and the initial buy in is steep. It is smarter to wait it out, wait for bugs to be ironed out, weight for price to drop and then finally purchase. I believe some of the repair costs are also slightly inaccurate. They claim an iphone 7 screen repair is around $149 however it is not unheard of for people getting it done for much much less. I’ve seen those who have had it done for around 60! In my opinion some time in the future the high price will subside a little bit…. hopefully. For now I’ll stick to my old model.

  10. I remember paying $200 back in the day for the IPhone 3 when i had an upgrade so to see that the price of a broken screen on the IPhone X is almost $300 dollars is crazy. Also the fact that so many people are going out and getting this phone amazes me with a $1,000 price tag. You can buy a computer for cheaper. As of now i hope nothing goes wrong with my IPhone 6 because i defiantly wouldn’t pay all that money for the new models.

  11. This is honestly ridiculous! On top of paying an extremely expensive amount for the phone itself, you have to worry about what it will cost to repair if its damaged!! Highly suggest everyone getting this phone to purchase the biggest otterbox case there is or be ready to spend up to $1,000 repairing your phone. I do think apple care is worth getting in cases like this where you will be saving a lot of money.

  12. Yes, the price of this iphone and repair is absolutely ridiculous. But I do not understand why people are so surprised by this. At the end of the day this company only cares about making money, so yes something as minuscule as changing a headphone jack could cause uproar it is because they are just looking for ways for the customers to buy more products so they can make more of a profit. Though the pricing is absurd I did purchase the iphone x. I did not do this to conform. I did it because my phone model is four years old and if the iphone 8 is only slightly different than the iphone 7s/7. Why would I get that if I could have gotten the 7 last year? So fingers crossed for this new iphone x I guess! Hopefully I don’t drop it!

  13. To be honest, the people buying this phone most likely do not care how much it costs to repair. Personally when I cracked my phone the one time I dropped it, it was my fault and I paid for it. By the way the numbers in the article are wrong because from apple, to fix my screen was $200 to begin with, so $280 does not seem far fetched because of the more advanced technology. I do not think the prices are ridiculous, you are paying for better technology that cost apple themselves more money to produce so why would they sell it for the same price as the older phones?

  14. I never liked the brand, I received a mac book when i was in high school, I installed Windows on it. I received 3 i pads, I gave them all to my parents as their birthday gifts. As for cellphones, I used Android when it first came out in 2008 and never changed.(Before that was BlackBerry). Now, they are having higher and higher prices….. that`s fine, but be worth it. Please and thank you. And don`t brag about face ID, Samsung s been doing that for more than 4 years.

  15. The iPhone X is a costly product, and for apple users I hope it will be worth it! I considered upgrading to the new iPhone from my 3yr old Samsung phone. Prior to that I had an iPhone. Despite repairs for a phone not usually being a consideration in purchasing, in the case of the iPhone X, it is crucial information. From experience with my previous iPhone I know that there is a slim chance the iPhone screen is not going to crack at some point and/or another and the design of their newest phone is said to be the most fragile of them all! Apple claims the new phone has the most durable glass ever, however, recent news has revealed that not only is this phone super expensive to repair, it is the easiest to break! It is unfortunate but a screen repair cost is probably in the near future for many new iPhone buyers. Here is a link to an article about this: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeanbaptiste/2017/11/07/iphone-x-teardowns-drop-tests-revealed-flawed-design-easy-to-break-most-expensive-to-repair/#70cb205527ec

With that said, perhaps this will be a new consideration for those in the market for a new phone in the future; as well as for those who pre-ordered the iPhone X but will not be getting it any time soon.

  16. I just don’t understand why consumers are so loyal to Apple sometimes. I have an iPhone 5 still and it isn’t cracked, broken, slow, or anything unattractive so spending over $1,000, not including future repairs, on a new phone isn’t even in my stratosphere right now.

  17. I recently saw an article on Buzzfeed that talked about the number of people who have been shattering their iPhone X before the warranty even kicks in. This is obviously unfair of Apple to charge such a ridiculously high price for iPhone repairs, although I do think that it will increase the number of people who will invest in Apple Insurance. But I also think that this will create more of a market for third parties to offer iPhone screen repairs and charge about a fifth of the price of Apple. Although these already exist in Kiosk’s in the mall and other repair stores, I believe that this market will increase will less people being able to afford the price for Apple to repair the phones themself. However, if people are willing to pay $1000+ for the iPhone X, they’d probably be more willing to pay $500+ for the repairs.

  18. I think it makes sense that the iPhone X costs much more than the other iPhones to repair. This phone sells for much more than the other ones, and it would only make sense to have a higher repair price tag. If someone is willing to pay over $1,000 for their phone, then they should be willing to go to the furthest extent to fix it.Though, it deems inconvenient to have to pay this much to get your phone repaired, especially when it seems that a majority of iPhone owners have cracked their screen. To prevent the most common mishap, cracked screens, it only costs about $50-100 to buy a durable case, which will prevent you from paying such a high cost in the future.

  19. The price tag of iPhone X is apparently high but it still receives great expectation. iPhone X do have a brand new design, from its camera, OLED screen to its screen portion and people just cannot wait to try this new one. Consumers may consider other high-tech phones such as Samsung Galaxy when they consider purchasing iPhone X. However, repair price will not influence sales since price-sensitive consumers may not interest in iPhone X in the very beginning. At least we can purchase a warranty.

  20. I think the cost of the iPhone X as well as the cost of repair are pretty indicative of high sunk costs apple put into the development of the product. The cost is rather high, and I don’t see a purpose in paying outstanding prices for unnecessary features that seem like a huge invasion of privacy to me. I’m sure apple has a database with everyones fingerprints and face scans that they could sell, or have the risk of compromising the information through hackers. If the iPhone X is something you really want and you have the money to waste on it, by all means go for it, but most people who understand the value of their money will most likely opt for a cheaper option.

  21. I currently have an iPhone 6 and may be in need of an upgrade in the coming months. No matter how nay commercials I see with the new and improved iPhone , it will not persuade me with the current price. Brand loyalty has kept apple in my household for the past couple of years. Very well might change in the near future.

  22. I have no idea of the Apple care service here in United States. But in China, if someone brought his phone to repair service due to breaking screen, usually he or she will get a renewed phone which is not the original you sen for service. However, i strongly recommend you to buy Apple care products for Iphone since the quality is becoming worse.

  23. I don’t find the increased prices surprising, nor do I expect Apple to react to any backlash over it. It has been well established that Apple has something close to a cult backing it, leaving them little reason to meaningfully change. This is amplified with Steve Jobs’ ideology of “A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.” With market cap exceeding nine hundred billion recently, it is clear that the investors aren’t worried about any backlash either.

  24. I understand Apple want to make money but this is a little ridiculous. The fact that the phone in general cost a lot of money this should lower the cost of repair. Or instead of investing money on changing the look of the next iPhone they should invest their money in making the screen on the iPhone more durable and harder to break. By just dropping your iPhone the screen can shatter. They should make the glass harder to break making less people needing to replace the screen multiple times. This would make the customer much happier.

  25. This chart is so ridiculous to look at! The iPhone X itself costs a significant amount more than the other models, Apple should understand that their consumers won’t want to pay even more to repair it. Apple is extremely successful already, the repair costs for all phones should be lower, and maybe around the same price. I agree with a few other posts that more work and money should be put the screen itself to ensure better durability because right now it’s super easy to crack the screen! I am not shocked by this because Apple has always found ways to get the consumer to pay more anyways, and everyone will still pay these prices because they are what they are, but it is so ridiculous. I would never check the costs of repair when buying a new phone, because at the time all I care about is the new phone I’m getting, and I think that this is Apple’s mindset. I’m sure less than half of people buying the new phone checked these repair costs, and will be surprised when they crack their phone. This post is very informative and I will think twice in the future when purchasing a new phone.

  26. After reading this post, I realized that if someone really would like to buy a iPhone X,she/he absolutely need to add Apple care for warranty. As we know, iPhone X is most expensive than any other iPhone, but is most easy to break than others ( from Aluminum to Glass). It might caused consumers to cost more when they break their iPhone X. After this consideration, that I think Apple care is really worth it when someone buy their new iPhoneX.
If someone want to buy iPhone X, it is really necessary to add Apple care and buy for new iPhoneX’s case to protect it to save money as well.

  27. The high cost of screen repair doesn’t surprise me for the Apple X. From a business perspective, Apple can charge whatever it wants early on because the consumers of this product at this stage are loyal fans of the brand and also spent $1000 on purchasing the phone already. Side sales like this for Apple probably has excellent price margins and will help the company grow the product in its early stage

  28. I can say with honesty that your in class and online presence that in all terms is against this phone and the ludicrous truly turned me against the phone. Yet, I have to admit that it did me well, because you were right, that the price is crazy. In the past I have relied on iPhone as someone who doesn’t have the money to invest in a quality camera AND lens AND camera equipment AND photo editing software. I would invest a little more money into a new iPhone with a quality phone but the difference leads me to believe I should finally invest in a real DSLR camera finally after all these years if iPhone continues to release phones with this much of a price increase compared to past products.
