Patagonia is a remarkable company that is true to its original mission: “Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire, and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.” Today, it “is a designer of outdoor clothing and gear for the silent sports: climbing, surfing, skiing and snowboarding, fly fishing, and trail running.” It operates online and through 30 stores.

What makes Patagonia distinctive from a social responsibility perspective is its giving back to the community, especially with regard to the environment. For Black Friday 2016, Patagonia pledged to donate all of its SALES revenue to environmental issues. Other companies sometimes pledge to donate from their PROFITS. But it is very, very rare for a firm to donate all of its sales.

As reported on the Patagonia blog by Rose Marcario:

“When we announced we’d give 100 percent of our global retail and online Black Friday sales directly to grassroots nonprofits working on the front-lines to protect our air, water, and soil for future generations, we heard from many of our customers calling it a ‘fundraiser for the earth.'”

“We’re humbled to report the response was beyond expectations. With your help, Patagonia reached a record-breaking $10 million in sales. We expected to reach $2 million in sales — we beat that expectation five times over. The enormous love our customers showed to the planet on Black Friday enables us to give every penny to hundreds of grassroots environmental organizations working around the world.”

“Many of these environmental groups are underfunded and under the radar, and they are overwhelmed with your commitment. On behalf of these activists and every Patagonia employee, we extend a heartfelt thank you to our customers, friends, and community worldwide who showed up to #loveourplanet.”

“You can learn more about the past recipients of Patagonia environmental grants in your community here. This additional infusion of resources will go a long way toward addressing climate change and other serious environmental issues.

  1. I personally already thought Patagonia was a great company but this really put them on the top of my list. They have always made great quality products and have different styles for many different people to buy from. Although they may be a little pricey, it is worth the money because of the durability of the product their mission to give back to the community. This is a huge step in the right direction for this company and I hope this will encourage more people to buy from them. More companies should use Patagonia as a role model and aspire to be as socially responsible as they are.

  2. It’s a good marketing strategy that linking the company with environment conservation so that consumers will feel the company has a civic mind and love to purchase on that website due to consumers will also gain non-physical benefits such as self-fulfillment and labels of kindness, eco-friendly and environment protector. Patagonia just needs to donate the sales revenue on Black Friday and will obtain positive buyer “bias” and preference in the long term.

  3. I commend Patagonia. Personally, I do not know much about the company, but for a company to take a day where they know they could make a lot of money for itself, and using it to help the plant is something that I find amazing.I hope their actions help push other companies to help out with important causes. They don’t have to donate 100% of Black Friday proceeds, but even a fraction of their sales would be a step in the right direction.

  4. I think this is a great marketing tool and an incredible achievement for Patagonia. It shows how much Patagonia cares for the environment and consumers take notice. Customers want to feel as if they’re making a difference and spending their money correctly. Donating 100% of their retail and online sales shows how dedicated they are in supporting what they believe in, and from this point forward consumers will associate Patagonia with positive things. This is beneficial for both the environment and Patagonia.

  5. I have been an avid customer of Patagonia. I love not only their products, but there mission as well. By incentivizing the economy as a way to exceed their average revenue, the company was able to make 5 times their sales projection for Thanksgiving weekend. Their mission statement,“Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire, and implement solutions to the environmental crisis,” is truly inspiring in every way. Their durable products are made with the sole intentions of causing no harm, and their eco-friendly marketing and development strategies should be followed by other organizations as well. Patagonia is just giving the customers what they promise, which in itself is respectable.

  6. I think Patagonia company is a true sense of environmentalist. They donated GLOBAL retail and online Black Friday sales directly to the nonprofit organization, I have never heard other companies had done that before. The reason why they did this is far more beyond marketing themselves, but protecting our planet, truly “fundraiser for the earth.”

  7. I don’t even know this brand before this blog, i knew CSR is really important for company to have a different inside and also attract consumers. Patagonia did a really good job and i will try to shop this brand later.

  8. Patagonia company is very different with some other companies. It not only says CSR is important but also proves it by the real action. It donates 1% of total annual sales to grassroots environmental groups, which is impossible for most companies. This company cares about the environment and wants to do something for the environment.

  9. I think it’s very important to care for the environment, especially for companies and big brands. 1) Firms have money to donate/resources to give back. 2) Firms have the platforms to encourage people to care for the environment to give back.

The fact that Patagonia donated all of its sales is amazing. Not only is that such a big help to the organizations that help the environment, but it’s also a testament to what kind of company they are. And hopefully it will inspire others to do more for the environment.

And it was also a good marketing idea (whether someone had that idea deep down inside or not). They announced their plan to donate all sales, this enabled people to purchase because it was for a good cause. All that merchandise that was bought is now out there for others to see.

  10. I believe this is an awesome showcasing apparatus and an unfathomable accomplishment for Patagonia. It demonstrates the amount Patagonia watches over nature and customers pay heed. Clients need to feel as though they’re having any kind of effect and spending their cash effectively. I will now look into shopping with Patagonia. Giving 100% of their retail and online deals indicates how committed they are in supporting what they have confidence in, and starting now and into the foreseeable future customers will relate Patagonia with uplifting things to their customers.

  11. The fact that Patagonia donated 100% of its sales revenue to grassroots nonprofits, on one of the most important days in regard to sales for many companies, is truly remarkable. Black Friday is regarded as one of the best days for companies, in regards to revenue, so the idea of donating all of that revenue is a truly commendable. Not only is it beneficial for raising awareness for improving our environment, it also benefits Patagonia in terms of its brand and its relationship to its consumers. As a accompany that makes products for those who are active in environments such as the ocean and mountains, it only makes sense for them to care about the planet. Their consumers will value the company and its products much more, especially those that also care about the well-being of the environment.

  12. I am very impressed by this company and already plan to try and purchase some of my holiday gifts from them. I have never heard of a company that used Black Friday as a charitable day and the response they got from consumers just shows that people do like giving for the holiday season and are concerned about the earth.

  13. I find it amazing that Patagonia gave 100 percent of their global retail and online Black Friday sales directly to grassroots nonprofits working on the frontlines to protect our air, water and soil. Being a loyal Patagonia customer I find this marketing advertisement amazing because it gives me a way to shop for things I want while helping the earth at the same time.

  14. There must be a lot of respect to Patagonia for their impressive pledge to donate all of their SALES to the issues that are important to them. The brand is a very good one, as I own their backpack and am very satisfied. Companies want to convey a message and this philanthropic message is an incredible way to obtain consumers. Even though the company did not make money on Black Friday because of their noble cause, they will grow even more because of the great message their pact sent. This company is truly an inspiration to those seeking to understand how to convey to perfect message to consumers.

  15. Companies like Patagonia are what’s right with this world. The fact that they would give up their own profits on a day that they’re guaranteed to make revenue is remarkable. Not only are they helping out the environment through their own contributions, but they are helping themselves too indirectly by getting their name out there for being a genuine and authentic company. It was a good marketing ploy on their behalf that raised environmental awareness as well as consumer awareness

  16. Before this post, I do not about the company Patagonia. But after reading it, I really like this company, because Patagonia is doing right in protecting our world. Nowadays, many companies just pursue the sales growth with no worry about the environment, such as many industries in Beijing, the capital of China. There is a serious smog there. People go out with a gauze mask. At the same time, there are more and more people that have the lung cancer due to the poor environment. As a consumer, I will support and like the company that is friendly to our environment.

  17. It is a shame I have never heard of Patagonia before this post. They are doing wonderful things for the issues they care about most. By donating ALL of their sales, they are showing they truly care about our Earth. Companies like Patagonia need more attention in the national media, because they are making such a difference.

  18. Patagonia is a well-known company that sells clothing for outdoor activities. Personally, I don’t find the quality great enough to last more than a week in the wilderness. I can easily spend up to 300 to 500 dollars on a good backpack. I find that the material Patagonia uses is not the best if you want to really what to trek the trails. I have hiked in rain, snow and even hail even though it’s very fun to do. I prefer other brands to theirs.

  19. Giving back to the community is really a good way for the company to show that it cares about the whole society. In this way, companies could raise its reputation and enhance a good brand image. Canon also does a good job on giving back to the society. It sponsors Yellowstone National Park and provides researchers professional cameras to study the behaviors of the animals in the park. This foundation not only helps researchers to do better research but also benefits Canon for promoting its products.

  20. Patagonia is a very successful company so it wouldn’t hurt to donate all of its sales from black friday. $10 million is record breaking and a huge accomplishment, but by donating all that money it is also great publicity for the company.

  21. It’s quite impressive to me that as a well-known company, Patagonia donates all the sales from Black Friday to address climate change and other serious environmental issues. It’s rare but remarkable. I don’t even know this brand before reading this article, but now, the degree of favorability of this brand has increased, if I plan to buy some outdoor clothing, I will consider this brand. I think the brand awareness and reputation would also largely increase since this action.

  22. I found this article breathtaking, considering the purpose of any company is to maximize profits, and this promotion essentially undid this entire facet of company life. I commend Patagonia for its actions, and furthermore for its goal to be met with 5x its expected projections was incredible. Hopefully, Patagonia is able to increase its customer base in order to help the environment even more in the future.

  23. Once a company pays attention to its social responsibility and giving back to the community, things changed. Before reading this post, I do not know about the Patagonia company. But after knowing what they did and contribute to this earth, I would definitely pay attention to it. We have to admit that this is a marketing method of Patagonia, but bravo!

  24. Profit is not the only aim of a successful and mature company. How to take their social responsibilities is also important. Patagonia do a very good job. I think social responsibility is neither a ‘burden’ for a company, nor a contradiction to their profit-orintied aim. Giving back to society will help company market themselves and achieve popularity among people. At the end, a company will get return from its charity.

  25. This is truly an awesome business, and the idea to donate all of its black Friday proceeds to charities that will enhance our environment is even more awesome. This was a bold move by Patagonia, and although they are losing out on making millions of dollars on black Friday this year, I think that this move will yield huge dividends for them in the future. This idea is unheard of, and Patagonia is the first company that I have heard of that has had the courage to pull it off. I hope that this move by Patagonia causes more companies to do the same thing, and donate at least part of its proceeds to a cause from black Friday. This was a bold move, but I believe it was one that Patagonia strategically made because they know it will make them more money in the future.

  26. I have personally never heard of Patagonia so this was a very interesting read. I did however decide to Google them and found them to be quite pricey. Let’s just say, I don’t see myself purchasing from them any time soon. However I enjoy everything this company is doing for the community! I definitely agree that ore companies should follow in Patagonia’s steps to be as socially responsible.

  27. Patagonia has adopted a great marketing strategy that they concern about environment issues and donate its sales revenue. In return, it has achieved its promotion goals to attract more attention and build up a good image. Personally, I ddi not know this brand before but after reading this article, I may choose this brand as my first choice if I need to purchase some outdoor clothing.

  28. I think what patagonia did here is fantastic and raises the bar for other companies to do the same. Patagonia is a large company and I suppose they can afford to donate black friday sales. On such a commercial shopping day full of chaos and frenzy it is nice to see that the company tried to bring people back to core values and not materialistic aspirations. Patagonia showed their customers (and non-customers) where their values lie and what kind of business they are. Donating the money is an honorable thing to do and to me, gives them credibility and makes me want to spend more with the brand. Way to go Patagonia!
