According to comScore, as of the end of 2015. nearly 200 million people in the United States owned a smartphone. This represented 80 percent of the mobile market:
“Apple ranked as the top OEM [original equipment manufacturer] with 42.9 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers. Samsung ranked second with 28.4 percent market share (up 0.8 percentage points from September), followed by LG with 9.9 percent (up 0.5 percentage points), Motorola with 5.3 percent (up 0.5 percentage points), and HTC with 3.3 percent.”
“Android ranked as the top smartphone platform in December with 53.3 percent market share (up 1 percentage point from September), followed by Apple with 42.9 percent, Microsoft with 2.9 percent, and BlackBerry with 0.9 percent”.
And this table shows the popularity of the top 15 mobile apps.
I was very surprised about the statistics revealed about phones and apps. It seems as though everyone favors the iPhone these days, but Android ranked the highest at the end of 2015. Even more surprising were the statistics on apps. Facebook has faded out over the years in favor of more recently developed social media platforms such as Twitter, yet FB is still #1 while Twitter is much further down on the list at #15. I was unaware that FB was making a comeback. (Or maybe it never left!) Overall, it’s understandable that so many people own a smartphone. Having grown up in the era of flip phones, I know what a disadvantage we were at with just the ability to make a phone call. I use my smart phone to organize my life by keeping a calendar and setting reminders. Without it I don’t know how I would function. Smart phone usage will only go up from here as they continue to improve them and aid in our daily lives.
I’m surprised that Android ended up being the top smartphone platform in the month of December. In a time like that, especially around the holidays, I’d expect Apple to up their game and sell as many products as possible. Also, from a personal experience, I don’t know a lot of people that own Androids. I have one but a majority of the people I know have iPhones. It just kind of caught me off guard. Another thing that surprised me was that in the top 15 smartphone apps, Snapchat was not one of them. Snapchat is one of the most popular forms of social media today and a lot of people have it. I just expected it to be on that list.
It is not a surprising fact that apple ranked as the top OEM. People have become loyal to apple products. And the most of the people who use Android switch to Apple when they want a new phones. However, Android ranked as the top smartphone platform in December because they Android is the collection of Samsung, LG, HTC, Motorolla. If each of these brands were singled out they would have lower ranked than Apple.
There is no doubt that Apple ranked as the OEM with 42.9 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers. Almost 80% of my friends and classmates are using iPhone now. More and more people change their Android smartphones to iPhones.
With smart phones, the life becomes more and more convenient.I use my phone to chat with my parents and friends, to photograph what I see and what I eat, to remind me what I should finish and so on.

I’m not surprise that Apple is ranked as the number one OEM with 42.9 percent. Many people preferred the Iphone although of the easiness of the phone’s cracking screen. This is because of apple’s product stimulation. Apple is very good at making customers like their products. They make sure that they plan a good advertisement and also find a better team to create a good stimulation to their products that is more attractive than other electronics companies. If we pay attention to the iphone’s siri which can help anyone communicate with the phone himself without pressing anything on the screen. Plus free games download which makes your phone fun to use and a clear view of pictures and video taping. All of these encourage customers to buy apple’s product and remain apple’s good customers.
The following article was interesting to read because I was shocked that Android was the top smartphone platform at the end of 2015, I expected apple in this place. I knew a large percent of the mobile market owned Android smartphones, although did not think it exceeded Apple. It was interesting to view the diagram of top 15 smartphone apps. I expected apps such as google search, google maps, yahoo mail, etc. to be ranked higher than Facebook or Facebook messenger.
