The new Star Wars movie has already set records with more than $100 million in advance ticket sales, and a huge amount of toys on retailers’ shelves. Its hype machine is in full gear — with numerous ads, appearances by the stars on late night TV shows, and glitzy premieres. Some are even predicting that the new movie will challenge Avatar’s $2.8 billion worldwide revenue record.

On December 14, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, it had its spectacular Hollywood premiere: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens had its world premiere on Dec. 14 in Los Angeles in a star-studded event that was expected to be one of the largest – and most secretive – Hollywood premieres.”

Do YOU think that Star Wars will be the success that is predicted?

  1. It was quite interesting to see all the buz around the new star wars film, though not totally shocking.
As was discussed in a previous post the ability of Star Wars to transcend generations makes it very uneque. For the reasons discussed above I do believe this film will be as successful if not more successful than anticipated.

  2. The marketing campaigns of the new Star Wars movies clearly have been a great success given the wide and diverse audience that they have engaged. I believe that the new Star Wars movie will live up to the hype that it has generated leading up to the release. The Star Wars franchise did not find it’s previous success due to the timing of pervious films; the story is universal and timeless. Also, the fantastical elements of Star Wars that made the story such a success in the past have only been heightened through modern technological advancements, CGI, etc. Because of this, I would take it one step further and say that Star Wars will not only “live up” to the hype surrounding the release, but actually experience greater success than in years passed.

  4. I believe the Star Wars films will have a huge amount of success solely based off of the brand name. There have been some fairly lackluster films in the past, for example the transformers serious, that have had some serious plot holes but still managed to hit it big at the box office. That’s because these kind of movies aren’t ‘good’ they’re entertaining. There’s no real substance to them. I believe Star Wars is destined to do well at the box office even if they botch the story.

  5. This Star Wars movie is perhaps one of the most expected of all time, the past star wars movie had a lot of success but the worlds exposure to media was not close to what is now, therefore i think that many more people have been exposed to the new release. Also the generation of fans of star wars have become wider, and bigger. As a movie that is the most expected of the year i think it will have the predicted success.

  6. i believe that this Star Wars movie will live up to the hype just off of its name alone. While i am not a star wars fan im sure i will see the movie at some point and im sure most people will resulting in it reaching large sale totals even if the movie turns out to be overhyped like most do recently.

  7. I am very excited to see the Star Wars Movie. I am hoping to go see it this weekend. The previews looks really good. I felt bad for the poor girl on the video who stayed up all night just to see the preview. She is a true dedicated fan. I could never do that for a movie when I can just see it in theatre in a few days. I hope the movie turns out to be amazing. Cant wait!!!

  8. Star wars has been around for a long time with iconic and classic movies like the empire strikes back and revenge of the sith among many others preceeding the newer animated movies and series. These movies have allowed star wars appeal to both the newer and older generations. Even the animated series and movies might attract newcomers. All of this has led to star wars having one of the most iconic, popular and recognizable names around the world in developing its brand. Just the name will sell millions and get peoples attention. It may not live up to its hype entertainment wise considering how high the bar has been set by the hype, but it will more than live up to the hype financially. It may be good but not great and that is the case with many good movies that have been over hyped today

All of this has helped to create one of the most popular, iconic and recognizable brands and names that new movies like this bank on. Entertainment wise it may not live up to the incredibly high bar set by its hype, but financial wise it will do more than live up to it. It may be good but not great and that is actually the case with many of the over hyped movies today.

  10. I think Star Wars will be so successful based on it being a classic. The marketing and promotion for this movie was by far outstanding because it reached various generations. I think this Star Wars will live up to the hype based on the brand name itself and promotion.

    1. I think Star wars will be a tremendous success as the marketers have been spot on, on who they want to market to. I feel as if they were to focus on showing more tv ad time that their revenue will increase as I have no seen as much as I should considering this is an anticipated movie

      1. Yes, I agree so much but I think they limited their tv ad time just to be based on the hype that is already surrounding it and that will continue to build up. To have people say “omg what do you think is gonna happen, what’s the plot/story line” because that may draw in more people to go see what the movie is about.

  11. Star Wars has one of the biggest fan base so its not surprising that they made over $100 million in advanced ticket sales. There hasn’t been any Star Wars movie released recently so the movie would obviously do incredible. Not only does the movie attract kids, but also all generations. The range is so wide its incredible. I think that the movie will do better than previous times and will make the most money.
