Copyright infringement is a serious offense, and the figure presented does a great job explaining what copyright infringement is and how to avoid it. However, copyright infringement does not pose a particularly strong threat to me. Plagiarism (which is similar to copyright infringement) on the other hand does, as it can be a huge problem when writing papers for classes. It can be difficult to read someone’s work and try to incorporate it into something you would like to present. Thus it is important to cite references so that there is no question about the source of your information.
As college students, we know from a young age that copying/stealing others’ work can be a serious offense. We learned that plagiarism in college could lead you to be expelled from your school! At Hofstra, we are all required to sign the Honor Code, and we can be in a huge amount of trouble if we do not follow it. In the workplace, it’s the same thing. One must come up with his/her own work, and give proper credit to sources used. If not, lawsuits will definitely take place. I think it’s important that we learn about this when we’re younger so it’s engrained in our minds to use this when we’re older, because we obviously do not want to be involved in any lawsuits.

We all know the copyright infringement, but it is not everyone that knows the detail and how to make it by a properly way. As a student we just mark footnote when we quote other references. If we post pictures or article without permission, it means we will be in trouble. So, we should remember these rules, that will be useful in our daily life.

Although these are both big issues, I believe that the bigger issue is that they are not talked about at an early age. All throughout middle school and high school, students are expected to write papers and create presentations based on research they do. Almost all of these assignments open up the door for copyright infringement and plagiarism. It’s crucial that students are educated at a very early age in regards to the seriousness of matter. This will help to prevent the misuse of another persons work, and will make us more aware of why giving the owner credit is important.

I think it’s hard nowadays to entirely make sure that you aren’t copywriting anyone or anything, because of the easy accessibility of the Internet. Content distribute which are against he copyright rules need to be taken seriously. Ones’s work cant not be used without any credits. When in the college and University level, students tend to use certain content without giving due credit and Moreover that becomes a practice unless they are corrected at a young age. The whole notion that “No one will catch me for small things like this” has to change. Instead if better ways to use the content or ways that abide by all copyright rules are taught to students at a young age, that makes it a win win situation for both the parties.
