According to JWT Intelligence’s Hallie Steiner:

“Video streaming and social networking are monopolizing mobile attention, according to research from Ericsson’s latest Mobility Report. Two-thirds of mobile traffic now comes from the top five apps in any given market — in the U.S. they’re Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, Instagram, and Snapchat, respectively. This year also marked the first time that more people watched streamed video content than broadcast TV over a weekly period. These are some of the top findings from the report, based on data from late 2014.”

“The implications for advertisers are, of course, huge. By 2018, $118 billion of the $150 billion global ad market will come from mobile, according to eMarketer projections.”

  1. Its is crazy to see how these phone applications are used so often and around the world. It is as if once these people start using facebook, snapchat or other applications they get addicted to it and cant stop using them. In the tech-savvy world we live in this will continue at an increasing rate. Children should be raised not to have their life revolve around these applications.

  2. These statistics sound very realistic. Since data plans are becoming cheaper and cheaper more people would rather using their cell phones to watch netflix, Instagram videos, or even Facebook videos. Since these applications are available on cell phones, people can watch them outside the house, on the way to work, school, or even at work and school. With this being said I agree that the global ad market will come predominantly from mobile.

  3. Video is a more popular way to attract customers to acquire information easily. But in some situation, like public place and quiet place or limited speed of network, customers would like search web pages and scan texts. Now with the development of Internet, the speed of network is increasing. So it creates good environment for customers to watch video that they want. From the chart, we could see Youtube is 1% less than Facebook. US youtube utilization is higher than other two countries. Because it depends on 4G network speed. And it is convenient for customers to use wifi anywhere to watch videos by mobil. If other counties would improve network, I think Youtube utilization by mobil is higher than now.

  4. It is interesting to see how much these apps and websites are used. With the addition of video to twitter I can see why video streaming has gone up. It is also interesting to me to see how the usage is broken up for other countries as it is similar to ours.

  5. I’m surprised that so many people are using YouTube and Netflix on their phone. Data is expensive especially if you have Verizon and by streaming videos through data it sucks it up and costs a lot. More people watch YouTube and Netflix because there are relatively fewer ads and they are easy apps to have on your iPad or computer. I stream it to my tv from my iPad by using google chrome cast and it is better than my cable. I am surprised Facebook has a higher percentage than Netflix because I know more people who use Netflix over those who use Facebook. It is smart that advertisers are noticing this trend and are creating ads that will be for the mobile devices. People are on their phones a lot of the time so it is a smart way to advertise.

  6. The problem with these statistics is the reality related to the types of apps that are most prevelant in our society. When someone has downtime, rather than reading a book or credible article, they are spending their time messaging friends on Facebook, binge watching movies or series on Netflix, posting photos of themselves (or what they are eating) to Instagram, or sending photos of themselves to others via Snapchat. If at least one of the top five apps in the US market were say, “The Wall Street Journal”, these statistics would be slightly less alarming. In my opinion, these social media networks are breeding a culture of individuals that are shallow, attention-span free, vain, and superficial.

  7. This is interesting to see just how much of monopoly that Facebook and these other apps in the top 5 are creating. Alongside this, there has recently been an article in the WSJ about telecom operators being frustrated at Internet giants (Facebook, Google, etc) because they allow users to make phone calls and send texts for free over the internet instead of using data plans.

  8. I do agree with these statistics considering that I fall into the category of mobile users. I am more likely to be persuaded from an advertisement found during my usage of apps rather than viewing an ad aired on T.V. Times are changing for society. Marketers must adapt to this new mobile trend if they are to be successful in their endeavors.

  9. I agree that mobile attention is monopolized by video streaming and social networking because I as a consumer am a culprit to using Netflix and Instagram excessively, these types of markets monopolize especially on the target consumer being teenagers and early adults. I dont know one teen who does not have at least a Facebook account and it is scary how obsessed people are getting with it. South Korea especially where many teens dont even leave their houses for their whole lives just stuck on their phones all day.

  10. In my opinion, the smartphone provides users easier way to obtain entertained information and contact with others, therefore video and social media play more essential role in mobile. In the future, advertisers or marketers will use more videos to transmit brand message to target customers in a more personalized method due to the location of every smartphone, meaning that even though two audiences are watching the same video on their own smartphone at the same time, they will get different advertisements for their previous distinguished mobile activities. For instance, you prefer to search more information of electronic products and your friend like to shop clothes more often, so that ad to you is about electronic products while ad to your friend is one brand of clothes.

  11. This article comes as no surprise to me. It is very clear that social media and streaming have taken over so many aspects of life. When it comes to discussing phones, it seems as if people are more concerned with the apps mentioned above than making calls or even texting. In an era where people are so addicted to these sites and features that they constantly need them ready to access in the palm of their hands, I can only hope children are being monitored a little more to live a life outside of these apps.

  12. I think these statistics are realistic because once you start on a trend it is hard to break it. Social media has become a major part of society and there is no way that people can function without it. Employers use these outlets to make decisions on new hires and even what is trending now to decide the best way to move their company. It is not surprising that Facebook is the top trending app because most people use this app to connect with other people and companies. It shows what people connect with and it can help companies target a certain group.

  13. Social media develops so quickly and so does the business opportunity it brings. It’s not hard to imagine that people get involved into social media easily and tend to be involved more in the future. Advertisements on social media sometimes become more attractive than they are on TV or magazines.

  14. There are so many social media platforms evolving, which is making it easier for people to spread their businesses, and advertise. Although not everything posted on social media is true, if it grasps someones attention, they will further look into that topic and open up google and explore more sites which can help bring other businesses to focus. Also, social media is now advertising things that we google along our side bars. I think this is not a disadvantage, but a new way to train our brains to look and learn information.

  15. The fact that $118 billion our of $150 billion dollars of global ads will be focused primarily on airing via mobile devices. It only makes sense that ads are going to be seen more on cell phones, being that this is the device people probably check most during the day because it is in the palm of their hands. I will also guess that this will help marketers reach their target focus groups more easily, as they can base where their ads are displayed based on apps that different age groups use most.

  16. As an avid follower of YouTube, Facebook, Netflix, Instagram, and Snapchat, it makes a lot of sense why they have all become just a normal part of life now. To go more specific into YouTube, this market has become so big that some of the biggest YouTubers make their videos their job and they can drop whatever they do and as long as they produce content and gain enough subscribers, they make more than enough money to support themselves. Of course, on all these aspects of social media, a lot of money is made from advertising. Social media is a way to expand your business for the entire world to see, and it can happen overnight if you can really get your name out there. In my opinion, $118 billion- $150 billion makes a lot of sense to me, being that they are only growing larger and larger nowadays.
