Instagram describes itself as “a fast, beautiful, and fun way to share your life with friends and family. Take a picture or video, choose a filter to transform its look and feel, then post to Instagram — it’s that easy. You can even share to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and more. It’s a new way to see the world. Oh yeah, did we mention it’s free?”

Well, it may still remain free to use Instragram in the future, but this social media channel will not be ad-free — as of this week!! What do YOU think of this?

What’s the deal? Here’s Instagram’s plan:

“If you’re in the United States, you’ll see the sample ad below sometime in the coming week. This is a one-time ad from the Instagram team that’s meant to give you a sense for the look and feel of the ads you will see. You’ll know a photo or video is an advertisement when you see the ‘Sponsored’ label where the time stamp normally would be. Tap this label to learn more about how advertising works on Instagram. We want ads to be creative and engaging, so we’re starting with just a handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community. If you see an ad that doesn’t interest you, you can tap the “…” below it to hide it and provide feedback about what you didn’t like. This will help us show you more interesting ads in the future.”

  1. think ads is a kind of way which can help Instagram to make money However, if they put lots of ads in Instagram, i guess i will be the first one to give up Instagram.

  2. I think that adding advertisements to Instagram can be seen both as bad and good. If we are looking at this from a business standpoint, the advertisements on this social media site is beneficial. Instagram is becoming one of the most popular social media outlets, and using instagram to promote one’s business is very smart.
Now, if we look at this as a teenager’s point of view, these advertisements may not necessarily be seen as a bad thing, but they sure will be annoying. INstagram essentially consists of the user scrolling through the main page to see other people’s pictures. As a new user of instagram, it is going to be increasingly annoying to see advertisements all over the place.
I mean its bad enough that I have to see how people are feeling after their crazy Saturday night out.

  3. Knowing the way it has already permeated almost every other social media platform out there, I don’t see the harm in exploring the advertisement territory on Instagram. On the business-end, its a brilliant way to bring a very visual ad to Instagram users in the form of both video and images. They key is the way they incorperated it: directly into the image feed. While other apps populate their screen real estate with incumbersome ads that hinder the apps use, Instagram ads will be low profile, allowing users to scroll past if they’re not interested, or click-in to learn more.

Even from a user standpoint, ads are not necessarily a bad thing. Most people attribute a negative connotation to the advertising industry, though internet technologies have begun evolving it into a smarter platform. For example, the more marketers and advertisers know about us, the better they can provide us ads that are relevant and useful to us. For example, rather than a college student being forced to view commercials for the new Lexus 2014 models, perhaps instead we receive ads for merchandise relating to one of our favorite television shows. By allowing Instagram to incorporate ads, users may now be able to learn more about the products and services they care most about, instead of the bothersome ones we don’t.

    1. Ads on Instagram was an unavoidable event that we all knew would happen eventually. However, I believe that Instagram has so much power with these advertisements because they have the power to be much more engaging. Everyone could probably agree that we all change the channel when an ad comes on television or change the radio when all the ads are on. With Instagram the ads will be more visual oriented and captivate consumers. I think that consumers will have a more positive look on the Instagram ads because they will be engaging. It will also be a great opportunity for many firms to advertise to a younger media without the interception of parents.

  4. I think this is an amazing marketing strategy if a company wants to target teenagers and even a lot of parents. This marketing will be beneficial to the businesses that advertise on Instagram because it is an easy way businesses can reach teenagers all over social media. It is great that if the ad doesn’t apply to the person it is advertised to he can tell Instagram what ads that will be more relevant. Another up side to these ads is that unlike other ads on most other websites, it won’t be annoying to get past it, just scroll down and don’t look at the ad. These are some reasons I think it is great to have advertising on Instagram

  5. I think Instagram would be a great platform to advertise off of. People of all ages are constantly refreshing their insta feeds and this will definitely grab their attention. If they like what they see they can tag their friends too, spreading the word even more.

  6. I think this is a smart idea on both Instagram’s and the advertiser’s part. Instagram is one of the growing apps that more and more people are beginning to use. Ads have been incorporated in almost all social media sites over time, so it was inevitable that Instagram would follow this trend. I think it’ll be a great way for companies to get their ads out there, especially in creative and unique ways that Instagram is known for. I also like that you have the option to “rate” the ad, depending on it’s relevance to you. The feedback that you leave will not only benefit you and the ads you see while using the app, but also the company and how well their advertisements are doing.

  7. I do not like the fact that instagram is now adding advertisements, feel that it will take up my newsfeed. I don’t like the fact that they are the same size as a regular post, maybe if they reduced the size. I do however like the fact one can like or dislike an ad, so that future ads can peak one’s interest . Overall when instagram does add ads, I think that there should be a limit as to how many one sees each day. On a marketing perspective, this allows data to be collected on consumers which could benefit companies.

  8. I’m honestly surprised that the idea of advertising on Instagram has taken so long to be implanted. As one of the leading social media outlets, Instagram was ad-free for the user, and for a long period of time. This will be a change for users, just as “promoted tweets” were a change on Twitter. But as long as users can simply scroll past the ads and aren’t forced to watch commercial videos (like on Hulu) then I think it will be a successful system to generate profit for the makers of Instagram.

  9. Marketers and companies definitely see in todays society that one of the newest and effective ways to reach their consumers is through social media. Companies want to see which products will be most beneficial to teenagers, and in exchange teenagers on social media can learn about the newest products that will potentially be out on the market. The fact that users can like or dislike an ad is very helpful to marketers. For example, with all the competition in the marketplace for tablets, companies like Windows can advertise their new Surface tablet through video and images. If a user doesn’t like the tablet, they can click the “…” button and provide feedback on why they dislike or are not interested in the product. Through this feedback, maybe Windows can figure out why product sales have been so low! Overall, I think advertising on Instagram will be very successful.

  10. Whereas many ads interrupt the flow of whatever you are doing (Pandora radio ads and YouTube ads) these new Instagram ads would be something that you could easily scroll through if you didn’t want to see them. I picture them being very similar to Twitter advertisements- easily avoidable. They are noninvasive while still reaching out to a very large market of young people. I have no ideas as to how companies will benefit form advertising on Instragram; time will tell. I do believe that the ads that will start appearing will not be a source of conflict for users and will only benefit Instagram as a top social media.

  11. As much as it is annoying that everywhere we look there are advertisements and we feel that we can not get away from them, it is a smart idea. If i was a business that could get my business to millions of viewers, then Id sure be a happy camper as well and would want to continue to get my name out there. As a frequent user of instagram, it is nice to get away from ads just since they are everywhere these days, but in the long run, advertising on this app will most likely have a positive outcome.

  12. It is not the worst thing that could happen to Instagram. We all knew that one day they would need to make more money and ads are the best way. I already love Instagram because it is visually appealing and if the ads are going to be the same way then I have no problem. Plus all you have to do is scroll past it in about 2 seconds. It is definitely not going to affect my feelings about Instagram because almost every social media site has ads now. I guess it is something I have just grown to accept. So bring on those visually appealing ads!

  13. I know ads are annoying, but I’m not necessarily hating on them. People get so angry at ads because they pop up and distract you from the media your using, but I understand why ads are needed. The world revolves around money and so Instagram having ads seems pretty fair to me. Also, if these ads are creative and engaging, it doesn’t seems so bad. It might actually be fun and you can click out of it if you don’t like it. As long as the ad is popping up in my face every second, I really don’t see this as being a very big deal!

  14. These ads on Instagram don’t seem like that big of a deal to me. Instagram is a company just trying to figure out how to generate some income from something that is free to the public. And ads are their way of doing that. Honestly, if the ad is just a picture, you can scroll past it, so it’s not like those annoying YouTube or Pandora ads. Just like on Facebook, the ads are there but I highly doubt any of us really see them. I just keep scrolling.

  15. I don’t feel that advertisements on Instagram are that big of a deal. When tumblr was bought out by yahoo, and announced there will be ads on the site freaked a lot of people out. Now if you have an account with tumblr, I’m sure others (like me) are used to the ads already. I think that it might be strange at first, but with all the changes in social media people will forget they’re there. I think it was a smart idea for instagram to make sure the pictures will be creative, because it will look like other user’s photos. I personally use instagram more than any other social media site, and as long as there isn’t a sponsor ad every hour then I think the ads will be a small almost unnoticed change.

  16. Although ad’s can be very annoying on social media sites, I don’t see it being a problem for an app like Instagram. Like it said in the blog, if it’s an ad you don’t like or an ad that is offensive or whatever it may be, you can just hide it from your profile and tell Instagram not to put anymore of those type of ad’s on your timeline anymore. Most ad’s on other sites constantly pop-up and interrupt what you’re doing for a certain period of time, but with Instagram, you can just scroll right past it and it won’t interfere with your experience. Plus, since Instagram, like most other social media sites, is free, so they need a way to make more of a profit and the best way to do that is to allow ad’s on their app.

  17. Seeing this ad on my Instagram feed was really annoying and i’ve only seen this one. I understand why Instagram feels like they need to do this but if it becomes overwhelming like facebook’s ads then I think they could lose several of their users to other free photo apps. I understand wanting to make profit because Instagram has become such a success and hopefully they can find a way to do this without overwhelming their users.

  18. It was only a matter of time before advertisements would start to pop up on Instagram. Social media apps that have become popular want to be able to use their success to make money and transform into a business. I do appreciate Instgram’s idea of using creative ads that almost resemble the photos we see on Instagram anyways. They might even be creative enough to catch our eye and make us want to double tap and like it! Hopefully video ads won’t start to appear on the feed, which make it mandatory to sit through the entire playback to continue scrolling. Everyone wants to make a profit on the next big idea.

  19. Adding ads to Instagram is a smart business move. It will create picture and video ads that are unavoidable to notice. It isn’t surprising that Instagram has finally decided to incorporate ads, in fact it’s more surprising that it hadn’t already done so. As an Instgram user though, I’m disappointed that this has happened. Although the ads aren’t as invasive as Pandora/Spotify/Youtube ads are and won’t disrupt my scrolling, it is still an annoyance to come across them. If the ads don’t pertain to me, or interest me, then it’s a waste of time to come across them. Although it’s a smart idea business-wise, it’s still an annoyance for users.

  20. I don’t mind that Instagram is getting advertisements because every app has advertisements these days. It is just something that you have to get used to. I like that it is giving you an option to hide the ad. Some apps don’t even do that.

  21. Instagram suffers from the same problem that most other social networking sites have, they have trouble monetizing users. Facebook and Twitter being the two biggest have already looked into ad posts or “sponsored” posts. I do not think overall that Instagram will be hurt too badly from these advertisements but rather should try to monopolize the cool factor they have faster rather then later. The internet is a fickle thing. Social networks have come and go and now its a fight to entrench for as long as they can. With the news that Facebook is losing popularity with teens it seems there might not be a too big to fail for social networks which should cause Instagram to find some sort of advantage and these ads certainly don’t seem to be a disadvantage right now.

  22. People are already complaining about the ads that are on instagram. It is just an annoyance to instagram users and i think people already advertise for companies just by posting their own photos to the public. People are constantly posting pictures of their starbucks, new michael kors bags, etc. And users scroll through their news feed, see these pictures, and want to go purchase these products themselves. I think these advertisements from companies are just going to frustrate people and if anything cause users to not check their instagrams as often and not want to use the app.

  23. I do not think that many Instagram users want this advertisement feature to be implemented, even though it already has been. To me, this is similar to when YouTube originally started selling advertisements in the beginning of popular videos. Even though people look down upon the fact that YouTube has advertisements, there is really no avoiding it. This is how many of these websites, or in instagram’s case, applications make their money, especially when the app is free. The use of advertisements on Instagram were unavoidable and is something that users will have to get accustomed to.

  24. I feel like this is a good idea for Instagram, because it will probably make more money, but will in a sense hurt the company as well. I would be annoyed if ads started to pop up in my news feed in between pictures of my family and friends, if I wanted to see an ad I could turn on the tv. When social media starts displaying ads it turns turns me away from that media. When facebook started to post ads I went from checking it constantly to checking it at only a couple times a day. I feel like it will be very weird to see ads on my instagram news feed.

  25. I feel that this is a good way to make a profit for Instagram. I don’t think these advertisements are going to discourage Instagram users from using using the app still. Ad’s are not that big of a deal if they catch your eye then that’s cool but if it doesn’t appeal to you its easy as one swipe to keep scrolling past it. I don’t think it will be that much of an annoyance because more and more apps today have Ad’s that pop up. It is just something our generation will have to get use to.

  26. It was only a matter of time until something like this came along for instagram. In fact, I am only surprised it didn’t happen sooner. With so many users, manny companies have already taken advertising into their own hands, creating “company” instragram accounts and advertising themselves. These paid for ads were bound to happen. Reaching all instagram users, companies are advertising to an overwhelmingly large population. Much like on twitter, these sponsored ads showed up on your feed as do all your other posts. Meaning, that users may view them multiple times a day even.

  27. Companies are definetly blowing up instagram with their advertising. Like mentioned in an early blog, a lot of companies are creating an account just for their firm and are constantly instagramming to get their brand more known. I personally do not mind, or think that ADS on instagram is a bad, or annoying thing. If people, like myself, enjoy looking at ads then we will take a few seconds to admire the post and possibly like it, and if not just move past it. It shouln’t really effect someone’s use of instagram or cause an annoyance to anyone.

  28. Instagram is one of those social media applications that I know many of my parents’ friends use. But putting ads on Instagram, or any social media for that matter, is just annoying. It’s a good idea to get one’s product out, but it’ll only be annoying for users. People commenting, or spamming, in pictures advertising a certain user or site is already annoying enough.

  29. wonderful insight. Really enjoyed reading this blog.
Keep up the good work and to everyone keep on learning!
