Despite the massive amount of music that is illegally downloaded, Americans are still actually purchasing a lot of their music.

According to Ethan Smith, writing on the Wall Street Journal Blog: “The U.S. may not be the land of the free, after all — at least not of free music. Americans bought twice as many albums in the first half of the year as they downloaded illegally through BitTorrent, according to a new report from research firm musicmetric. When it comes to individual songs, the discrepancy is even more stark: Americans paid for nearly 33 times as many songs as they pirated using BitTorrent — a popular way to distribute and download music and other media for free. Americans downloaded 75.6 million albums from BitTorrent from January to June, the London-based company said. That compares with 150.5 million CDs and album downloads sold in the U.S. during the same period, according to Nielsen SoundScan.”

  1. Wow, wonderful blog layout! How long have you been blogging for? you made running a blog look easy. The total glance of your web site is wonderful, as smartly as the content!

  2. I feel as though many times people buy music these days is because they actually respect the music artist and want them to do well in their overall career. I know that if i am just looking for a single song by an unpopular artist or if i want an entire album that is outdated from decades ago, i will usually download it illegally. Also now that technology such as computers and tablets are getting into the hands of more and more adults and seniors, they have access to purchase music online and they will do so because that is the only way they know how and it is less intimidating. I think the increase in numbers is because older people are purchasing albums online. Many older people do not even want to bother with illegal downloading for moral and convenience reasons.
